Obituary For Mateo Francisco Gonzalez

Mateo Francisco Gonzalez, our treasured son, brother, grandson, and friend, lost his battle with schizophrenia on January 28, 2024, at the age of 26. He is survived by his parents, Tracy and Cisco Gonzalez; his sister, Angelica Smith; his grandparents, Cheryle and Larry Newkirk, Lydia Santiago, and Francisco Gonzalez; and a large extended family who loved him dearly. Born in Pleasanton, California, Mateo and his family moved to Iowa when he was 4 years old, and he spent his childhood playing little league and competitive soccer, developing a life-long loyalty to the Texas Longhorns, and learning how to cook a meal better than any restaurant could serve. Mateo discovered a passion for film when he was in high school, and after graduating he lived and worked across the country, gathering experiences and inspiration for his art. He moved to New York City in 2023 to follow his dreams of becoming a culinary chef. Those who knew Teo loved to watch him light up a room with his smile and cutting wit. He could talk for hours about movies and film and wouldn’t wrap up a conversation without giving the perfect recommendation for your next Netflix binge or movie night. He will always be remembered for his deep capacity for love; his generous and charitable nature extended beyond his immediate relationships to anyone in need. If you would like to express your sympathy, donations to the National Alliance for Mental Illness Southern Arizona chapter can be made in Mateo’s honor at https://www.namisa.org/donate/. If you or someone you know is at risk of suicide, please call or text the U.S. National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 988 or go to SpeakingOfSuicide.com/resources for additional resources.
